Introduction to Pneumatic Medicine

Pneumatic Medicine is the use of non-invasive, dynamic pneumatic compression to treat a variety of medical conditions associated with compromised peripheral circulation. Some examples include venous insufficiency, chronic wounds or ulcers, and lymphedema. It is considered a welcomed adjunct to other treatment options, including surgery, oral and/or topical medications and compression stockings and bandaging.

Pneumatic Medicine's core component is the use of the NormaTec PCD, an FDA cleared, state-of-the-art Pneumatic Compression Device developed by Laura F. Jacobs, MD, PhD. Multi-cell inflatable boots (or sleeves) are placed around the legs (or arms) and rhythmically inflated and deflated to carefully prescribed pressures. Stagnant fluid in the affected limb is promptly mobilized via the patented Peristaltic Pulse pneumatic waveform. The NormaTec PCD provides software-controlled, precisely calibrated, dynamic pneumatic compression that mimics normal physiology. Additionally, custom sized boots and sleeves are available to fit any size patient from pediatric patients to bariatric (extremely obese) patients. Scrotal, pelvic and abdominal appliances are also available.

NormaTec is the exclusive distributor of the NormaTec PCD.
