Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Pneumatic Medicine?

Pneumatic Medicine is the use of non-invasive, dynamic pneumatic compression to treat a variety of medical conditions associated with peripheral vascular disorders. Some examples include:

  • chronic wounds or ulcers
  • venous insufficiency
  • lymphedema
  • sports medicine training and recovery

The core component of Pneumatic Medicine is the use of the NormaTec PCD (Pneumatic Compression Device), with its patented Peristaltic Pulse pneumatic waveform. It is considered a welcome adjunct to other treatment options, including surgery, medications, and static compression such as stockings/bandaging.

What are the indications for Pneumatic Medicine treatment with the NormaTec PCD?

The NormaTec PCD is FDA-cleared for the following medical conditions:

  • Venous stasis ulceration
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Post-mastectomy lymphedema
  • Acquired lymphedema (secondary to cancer and also following trauma, inflammation, surgery and/or radiation treatment)
  • Congenital lymphedema
  • Other edematous conditions
  • Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Are there any contra-indications?

The only contra-indication for the use of the NormaTec PCD is an acute DVT.

Co-morbidities, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, arterial insufficiency, infections, cancer, post-phlebitic syndrome, and end-stage renal failure, are NOT contra-indications.

How does the NormaTec PCD work?

Designed to mimic healthy physiology, the patented Peristaltic Pulse waveform (exclusive to the NormaTec PCD) employs a sophisticated pulsing, gradient, and distal release compression pattern.

The Peristaltic Pulse pneumatic waveform incorporates the physiological concepts of:

  • pulsing compression simulating the "muscle pump" of the limb,
  • gradient directionality of flow as occurs in the venous and lymphatic one-way valves,
  • distal release as seen with the effective movement of fluids during peristalsis.

Through these mechanisms the NormaTec PCD gently but effectively forces fluid from edematous tissues, dramatically and rapidly reducing swelling and induration.

What makes the NormaTec PCD different from others on the market?

While other PCDs (formerly called "lymphedema pumps") have been on the market for over 40 years, only the NormaTec PCD uses the patented Peristaltic Pulse pneumatic waveform which mimics the principles found in normal healthy physiology to improve venous and lymphatic flow. It is considered a significant scientific advancement going way beyond intermittent sequential compression.

The NormaTec PCD can accommodate any size patient (pediatric through bariatric) and scrotal, pelvic, abdominal, and amputee appliances are also available.

Do I need to buy any equipment or supplies, and how do I bill for my services?

There are no equipment or supply costs for the clinician. Since the compression applied by the NormaTec PCD is both dynamic and circumferential, patients experience soothing and well-tolerated independent home treatment sessions, even if they typically have severe pain at rest or with palpation. The NormaTec PCD's settings are fully programmable to meet each patient's medical needs and comfort.

How often do patients use the NormaTec PCD?
